Sessions:
Each session begins with a meeting of parents/grandparents/other involved adults and a RWM site coordinator. Site coordinators lead parents in discussion about their experiences with the previous session’s book, both in the classroom and later at home. They explore with them general information about children’s literature, the development of language and literacy in young children, and other parenting concerns.
The middle part of the session is spent in classrooms, where children and parents watch the teacher model reading aloud the book for the day and then everyone helps children with a related activity.
The final part of the session is again for adults only, and includes conversation about the book and topics related to it, and ways to share the book at home. Often library resources, adult education possibilities, career center offerings and the availability of literacy tutoring will be discussed. Everyone goes home with a free copy of the day’s book, a poem for families to learn together, and materials and suggestions for a follow-up activity at home. To reduce barriers to adult participation, childcare is provided for younger children free of charge to participating families.
